Expand your understanding of living systems and investigate all facets of life through our comprehensive Biological Sciences program. Delve into topics ranging from microscopic cellular mechanisms to broad ecological relationships among organisms, examining how environmental changes influence these dynamics. Whatever your passion within the life sciences, our department offers outstanding educational experiences and guidance for every student.
Biology explores life's evolution and ongoing development on Earth, investigating everything from intracellular molecular activities to ecosystem-level organism interactions and environmental impacts. Specialization options include: Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology; Environmental and Integrative Physiology; Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity; Ecological and Environmental Studies; and Integrative Biology. The Biological Sciences curriculum features foundational classes in general biology, covering fungal, algal, animal and plant diversity, along with genetics, cellular biology, physiology, ecology and evolutionary theory. Additional course offerings span invertebrate and vertebrate anatomy, plant and animal ecology/physiology, northern ecosystems, molecular biology, fungal studies, insect science, developmental processes, freshwater systems, fish biology, bird studies, animal behavior and mammalian science. Our program combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory work and occasional field excursions, with more than 80 undergraduate courses available. Students can also enroll in biology-related classes from other departments, including microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural sciences, environmental studies and human genetics - essentially any relevant discipline across the university.
