Sociology examines how people interact and the societal frameworks they establish. The Sociology Department focuses on six key research domains: crime and justice systems; cultural dynamics and interpersonal relationships; public health and wellbeing; authority, advantage, and dissent; societal progress and disparities; along with policy implementation and community work. Often characterized as both a scholarly discipline (analyzing human communities) and a lived experience (identifying the norms, regulations, and systems influencing daily existence), sociology provides valuable perspectives. Through a sociological viewpoint, we gain clearer insights into how individual experiences connect to broader historical and social contexts. Applying C. Wright Mills' concept of the "sociological imagination" to personal circumstances encourages reflection on how societal factors grant advantages—such as educational opportunities or financial resources—while also highlighting systemic barriers like racial discrimination or wealth gaps that create disadvantages.
