French arrived in Alberta with early fur traders, becoming the first European language spoken in the region. Today, about 265,000 Albertans speak French as their mother tongue (representing 2% of the population), with growing numbers of fluent speakers. In Lethbridge, where the distinctive coulees take their name from the French verb "couler" (meaning to flow), the French language and Francophone culture continue to thrive.
