Within UFV's Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees, students may choose Art History as a minor or extended minor concentration.
Art history examines artistic creations and human expression across different eras. Students develop keen observational skills and learn to analyze visual evidence in artworks, architectural designs, fashion, and other creative forms.
During the initial two years, learners explore diverse artistic creations spanning prehistoric times to contemporary works, while examining their historical and cultural backgrounds.
Upper-level coursework focuses on significant historical periods including medieval times, the Renaissance, wartime eras, and modern art movements. Students investigate subjects like the establishment of art institutions, artistic philosophies, religious influences, colonial impacts, and curatorial methods.
The curriculum includes hands-on experiences through visits to local exhibitions, with potential trips to national and international museums and galleries.
Upon completion, graduates possess the terminology and historical knowledge to critically evaluate visual art from various historical periods.
