The University of Manitoba's School of Art Art History program equips students with essential research abilities in art historical studies, focusing on cross-cultural analysis, aesthetic principles, theoretical frameworks, critical approaches, and research techniques. This curriculum enables learners to examine both Western and non-Western artistic practices within their cultural settings, with particular attention given to Western art from the Renaissance era to contemporary times. Methodological considerations are integrated throughout all coursework, complemented by specialized classes in art theory and critique during intermediate and advanced levels. Participants enhance their understanding of artistic creation through optional studio courses.
The BFA Honours program requires an extra academic year featuring advanced art history studies and additional studio course options.
For admission to the honours track, students must first achieve 69 credit hours in the general Art History curriculum while maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA. Current students interested in transitioning to the BFA Art History honours program should consult with the School of Art's academic advisor.
