The MA and MEd specialization in Society, Culture and Politics in Education (SCPE) explores educational history, sociology, political dimensions, philosophical foundations, and cultural influences.
Our definition of education extends beyond traditional schooling to encompass non-formal educational settings and informal learning opportunities throughout all life phases. The SCPE program investigates how critical educational theories, policies, and implementations impact public life both in Canada and globally. As interdisciplinary scholars, we consider education a fundamental discipline intersecting with arts, social sciences, and humanities.
SCPE students and faculty collectively examine education's role in fostering societies that are socially equitable, environmentally conscious, politically engaged, and culturally inclusive.
The SCPE MEd requires completion of 30 credits through primarily coursework. This program emphasizes the study of educational practices, making it ideal for applicants interested in linking academic work to real-world educational applications. Such practices may involve (but aren't restricted to) K-12 instruction, community-based learning, environmental education, arts integration, education in international development contexts, and group facilitation techniques.
