The Faculty of Education at Lakehead University provides a Master of Education program tailored to align with your professional aspirations and academic pursuits. Our MEd program delivers a distinctive educational experience that engages with contemporary developments in both teaching methodologies and scholarly investigation. The program features two specialized tracks: Educational Studies and Education for Change.
The Education for Change pathway presents a forward-thinking curriculum enabling you to obtain your Master's degree with optional concentrations in Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE), Indigenous Education (IE), or Social Justice Education (SJE). These specializations can potentially be paired with Gender and Women's Studies.
Through the Educational Studies track, you can acquire your Master's while examining pedagogical research, theoretical frameworks, and practical applications across diverse learning environments, with additional focus areas available in Gerontology or Gender and Women's Studies. Our adaptable MEd program caters to working educators through multiple completion options: Thesis, Portfolio, or Course-based pathways. Both study fields support varied academic interests and offer full-time or flexible study schedules. The faculty proudly hosts two Canada Research Chairs (specializing in Environmental Education and Arts Integrated Research), the Centre for Place and Sustainability Studies, the Multi-Data Convergence Laboratory, and publishes the Canadian Journal of Environmental Education.
The Indigenous Education specialization builds upon Indigenous historical perspectives, philosophical traditions, sociocultural frameworks, and political contexts, incorporating Indigenous research methodologies that address colonial legacies and decolonization processes. This pathway emphasizes honoring Indigenous knowledge systems, exploring connections to land, investigating holistic wellness approaches, and revitalizing ancestral wisdom and languages.
