Faculty in this field examine both historical and modern shifts concerning capitalist employment structures, workforce dynamics, capital movement, migration patterns, labor governance systems, economic activities and institutions, consumer trends, cultural economics, and worker organizations.
In response to significant local and worldwide changes in employment and economic systems, our researchers undertake cross-national comparative studies across regions including Canada, China, India, Korea, and the United States.
UBC's sociology program maintains a rich legacy of community-engaged learning initiatives, offering students practical research opportunities with local Vancouver partners (such as RainCity Housing, SPEC, Vancouver City government, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change). The department features robust co-op programs and operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School (collaboratively with Anthropology). Gender and sexuality sociologists investigate evolving gender dynamics and sexual identity formations across different historical periods and national contexts.
