Psychology is a multifaceted field that seeks to comprehend the foundations of human behavior, mental processes, and feelings. At UBC, psychology began as just one course in 1915, originally taught within the Philosophy Department. As time passed, both the curriculum and faculty expanded, leading to the establishment of the standalone Psychology Department in 1958.
The cognitive science domain encompasses a broad spectrum of research topics and theoretical perspectives. These include sensory perception, knowledge acquisition and retention, memory under various physiological and emotional conditions, future-oriented memory, attentional influences on thinking, psychophysical relationships, connections between perception and action, cognitive aspects of creativity, mental processes during and after anesthesia, awareness, neural mechanisms of attention and cognition, as well as perceptual and cognitive changes throughout adulthood.
