The Applied Solid Mechanics field focuses on core research related to the mechanics of solid materials and structural systems. Researchers in this group employ advanced analytical, computational, and experimental techniques to study physical phenomena and practical engineering applications across various materials (including nanomaterials, metallic alloys, biopolymers, biological cells, wood, paper, and biocomposites), structural systems (marine and aerospace), medical devices (such as stents and bioadhesives), and sensor technologies (laser-based, X-ray, microwave). Their work receives financial support from Canadian funding bodies including the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Mitacs, Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), as well as international organizations like Human Frontiers in Research Funds (HFSP), plus partnerships with both Canadian and global industries.
