PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Since 1970, UBC has awarded Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in sociology, with the discipline's roots at the university tracing back to 1921. The sociology PhD program at UBC allows students to focus on one or multiple of the Department's seven key specialization areas:
Environment, Community and Social Change,
Family and Life Transitions,
Gender and Sexual Identity,
Health and Medical Systems,
Knowledge, Culture and Society,
Race, Ethnicity and Migration, and
Labor, Economics and Global Integration.
UBC's sociology department maintains a distinguished reputation for impactful research publications. Notable recent works include Gillian Creese's The New African Diaspora (U. Toronto Press), Amin Ghaziani's There Goes the Gayborhood (Princeton U. Press), Renisa Mawani's Colonial Proximities (UBC Press), Becki Ross's Burlesque West: Showgirls, Sex, and Sin in Postwar Vancouver (U. Toronto Press), and Wendy Roth's Race Migrations (Stanford U. Press).
The department has a rich tradition of community-engaged learning initiatives, offering students practical research experience with Vancouver-area organizations such as RainCity Housing, SPEC, City of Vancouver, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change. The program features robust co-op opportunities and operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School in collaboration with the Anthropology Department.
