Doctoral candidates concentrate on pressing modern challenges at the crossroads of language acquisition, literacy development, and socio-cultural change. Our programs attract educators and professionals who participate in coursework, discussions, and investigations examining diverse matters across various settings - both within and beyond traditional classrooms, spanning domestic and international environments, and covering all stages of life.
Participants will develop specialized knowledge in areas including identity formation through language/literacy, cultural literacy and linguistic behaviors, cross-cultural communication, Indigenous language preservation, family and community literacy traditions, digital literature and media, online communities, poetic expression, global literacy perspectives, lifelong literacy growth, educational language studies, discourse and multimodal evaluation, critical analysis of youth literature, EAL (English as an additional language) instruction, evaluation techniques, educator training, theatrical education, artistic approaches to literacy development, and communication systems. Those particularly interested in language instruction will explore subjects in practical linguistics, critical language studies, multilingual teaching strategies, second language acquisition processes, vocabulary and literacy development, language acculturation, educational technology applications, linguistic policy formulation, second language assessment methodologies, and associated research techniques.
