The University of Waterloo's Department of French Studies provides diverse undergraduate programs (including French Teaching Specialization, Honours, Arts and Business French, Minors, and Certificates) along with graduate programs (M.A. and Ph.D.). For those seeking to immerse themselves in French language and culture, our department presents exceptional opportunities. Additionally, we provide French language enhancement courses for all proficiency levels. Comprehensive course listings and program details can be found on our website. Our 4-year Doctorate in French Studies program focuses on three key research areas addressing contemporary challenges in French studies: digital archiving and electronic publishing, Ancien Régime literature and theory, and Francophone cultural/literary studies (19th-21st centuries).
This distinctive research domain encompasses manuscript transcription, digital editing, hypertext analysis, investigations into digital media's influence on Francophone literatures and cultures, historical studies of books and e-books, among other topics. It also incorporates multimedia applications for teaching Francophone literatures and cultures, along with archival studies involving personal correspondence and private collections.
