The doctoral program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) focuses on developing academic and research professionals. Each student's curriculum is tailored based on their educational background, work experience, and academic goals. The program requires at least 6 courses (21 credits) plus a dissertation. Working closely with their advisor, students create personalized study plans that incorporate core requirements while addressing their specific interests. The mandatory courses include: TESL Seminar (3 credits), Psychological Studies in Education Research Practicum (6 credits), and research methods (3 credits). Students select three electives - at least two from Educational Psychology graduate courses and one from Linguistics, Secondary Education, or Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Other department courses may be included if relevant to the student's focus. Some students may need supplementary courses to strengthen particular skill areas.
Our TESL Program prioritizes equipping educators with both teaching strategies and research skills to navigate evolving ESL landscapes. We offer professional growth opportunities for both new and veteran teachers through exposure to cutting-edge research and theoretical frameworks. Our approach helps educators formulate questions about classroom dynamics and investigate potential solutions. Graduate students frequently collaborate with TESL faculty on research initiatives.
