The Doctor of Philosophy in Bioinformatics (PhD) is a cross-disciplinary program that merges computer science with biological data management and analysis. This field utilizes computing systems to structure experimental data into databases, create novel algorithms and tools, and employ these resources to transform raw data into biologically significant insights. Over the last decade, our PhD curriculum has equipped students with skills to systematically arrange, visualize, process, and derive meaning from biological datasets. Learners benefit from interactions with globally recognized bioinformatics experts at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the BC Cancer Agency, while gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies to refine their expertise.

This PhD program bridges academic disciplines including computer science, statistics, molecular biology, and biotechnology with applied research teams in healthcare settings. The unique collaboration between the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the BC Cancer Agency provides students direct access to leading bioinformatics specialists, opportunities to engage in pioneering research, and chances to solve authentic bioinformatics challenges. Through internship programs, participants can work across Canadian and global academic institutions, research centers, and industries, strengthening ties between high-tech research communities in both private and public domains.
