The Biology Department provides thesis-focused graduate education for both M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees. Both programs mandate coursework, typically chosen from Biology course offerings, though students may select relevant courses from any university department or institution with advisory committee approval. A minimum of two courses must be from the Biology Department's catalog. All graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module, an online requirement to be finished within the initial 8 weeks of the first term, appearing on official transcripts. The Integrity Office will notify students about this module, which differs from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
Bioinformatics research encompasses protein structure studies, sequence analysis methods for DNA and proteins, plus evolutionary and ecological modeling. Contemporary evolutionary biology frequently employs computational genomics, while systematics (formerly taxonomy) now depends significantly on bioinformatics approaches.
