The program focuses on research, combining structured coursework, supervised original research projects, and thesis development. The Department of Dentistry provides MSc and PhD degrees in Medical Sciences (refer to Medical Sciences section) for post-DDS candidates or those holding a BSc or equivalent qualification. Students can pursue research across various dental fields where department faculty maintain active research initiatives.
The University of Alberta established its dental education program in 1917 within the School of Dentistry under the Faculty of Medicine. The inaugural full-degree program launched in 1923, with the first graduating class in 1927. Founding dean Dr. H.E. Bulyea, who joined from Harvard University in 1917, modeled the curriculum after Harvard's program.
In 1944, the school transitioned to become the Faculty of Dentistry, remaining Western Canada's sole dental school until 1958. The faculty educated dental professionals for all western provinces, advancing community and school dental health initiatives. Their pioneering research on dental disease prevention contributed significantly to Edmonton's water fluoridation efforts.
