Pathologists' Assistants (PAs) are medical professionals who assist anatomical pathologists. Their duties involve:
Conducting macroscopic analysis of surgical samples
Performing non-forensic post-mortem examinations
Processing tissue samples for diagnostic testing
Documenting specimens through photography
They may also take on leadership, teaching, oversight, and investigative responsibilities.
This intensive two-year graduate program culminates in a Master of Science in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology with a Pathologists' Assistant specialization.
The curriculum includes eight months of classroom instruction followed by sixteen months of clinical training, plus a research project in either fundamental or applied medical research.
The hands-on clinical training focuses on demonstrated proficiency, requiring students to master all aspects of specimen processing and post-mortem examination, including safety protocols, photographic documentation, professional conduct, ethical standards, lab administration, quality control, macroscopic evaluation, tissue dissection, verbal reporting, standardized documentation, cadaver preparation, and sample collection.
