The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering provides specialized facilities for graduate education and research, offering Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Degree programs are available in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Process Control, and Welding Engineering (with doctoral studies not offered for Welding Engineering). The MEng program is designed mainly for industry professionals studying part-time, though full-time students may also enroll.
Research areas in chemical engineering encompass fluid dynamics and rheology; reaction kinetics and catalytic processes; mass transfer and separation techniques; thermal energy transfer; thermodynamic studies including hydrocarbon P-V-T and phase equilibrium; polymer reactor technology; computerized process control; dynamic system simulation; biotechnology applications; mathematical modeling; and environmental engineering solutions. Numerous research initiatives focus on optimizing Alberta's natural resources, such as enhancing Athabasca bitumen and heavy oil feedstocks, along with natural gas processing technologies.
