The Social Justice and International Studies in Education (SJI) specialization examines education through philosophical, theoretical, and ideological perspectives while considering its social and cultural environments. Previously called "educational foundations," this area of study incorporates insights from philosophy, history, sociology, and related disciplines to analyze education across diverse local, national, and global contexts. It employs ethical principles, epistemological approaches, historical analysis, political economy, sociological perspectives, social theory, comparative education, and cultural studies as analytical tools for understanding educational systems. SJI coursework investigates connections between education and broader economic, political, and cultural structures, introducing students to various political, ethical, and epistemological viewpoints for examining issues like socioeconomic disparities, gender and racial dynamics, cultural diversity, LGBTQ+ identities, civic participation, environmental concerns, global development, transnational processes, activism, and postcolonial realities.
