The M.A. program offers students a choice between thesis-based and course-based tracks, both designed to cultivate graduates who critically and thoughtfully engage with diverse musical traditions while participating in cross-disciplinary academic discourse.
Students explore a wide array of musical methodologies. Faculty members have contributed publications on subjects spanning music therapy, world music history, canon formation theories, ownership in avant-garde music, and the effects of streaming services, legislation, and copyright on the music business. Professors actively encourage diverse thesis proposals.
The Music Department provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts, Master of Music, Doctor of Music, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The MA and PhD programs encompass Musicology, Music Theory, Ethnomusicology, Popular Music, and interdisciplinary music research. The MMus curriculum features concentrations in Performance (keyboard, piano instruction, orchestral instruments, wind conducting, and vocal studies), Choral Conducting, and Composition. The DMus degree is available for piano, organ performance, choral conducting, and composition, with potential consideration for other performance specialties on a case-by-case basis.
