The Sociology PhD program aims to cultivate scholars who possess comprehensive understanding of the field while developing expertise in specific areas. Alongside the outlined program requirements, participants must fulfill Professional Development obligations. This intensive program requires full-time commitment. Typically, students finish their 500- and 600-level graded courses during the initial two terms, followed by two years dedicated to completing their Specialization and Candidacy Exams. Upon passing the Candidacy Exam, candidates advance to the final research phase, which generally takes two years to complete their thesis and associated academic work.

Qualification Requirements

Master's degree with an average of 3.5 on all graduate courses and undergraduate coursework taken in the final two years (20 single-term courses) at the University of Alberta, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution. TOEFL minimum score of 600 (paper-based), or a total score of 100 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based). IELTS minimum overall band score of 7, with at least 5.5 on each band (Academic).
