Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program offers an intensive curriculum focused on original research and knowledge creation, culminating in a thesis. The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation's PhD program equips students to become autonomous researchers, motivating educators, and globally competitive professionals in academic and industry settings. Graduates gain qualifications for diverse career paths in academia, public policy, healthcare, kinesiology, and athletics. Founded in 1945 as part of the Faculty of Education, the Department of Physical Education launched under Professor Maury Van Vliet's leadership, initially concentrating on collegiate sports and mandatory physical education courses. By 1954, it evolved into the School of Physical Education, achieving Faculty status in 1964—a pioneering institution within the British Commonwealth.
Throughout its history, the Faculty has produced numerous coaches, athletes, scientists, educators, and movement specialists. Athletic programs have been integral to university life since 1908, with the Varsity Ice Hockey men's team marking the institution's first elite sports squad. The "Golden Bears" name originated in 1935, followed by "Pandas" in 1945. Today, the University of Alberta's Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics program remains one of Canada's most extensive, diverse, and consistently triumphant university sports initiatives.
