Are you passionate about teaching languages? Our program offers instruction in various widely-spoken languages that can be pursued as either a major or minor within a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. Each language specialization goes beyond fundamental speaking and writing skills to explore the rich history and cultural context of the language. Choose from majors in Cree, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Ukrainian, or inquire about other options. For languages not listed, we may create a customized program. Submit a full application, select "Second Language Other" during admission, then email edadmissualberta.ca to specify your language preference for feasibility assessment.

Why select the Secondary Education After Degree option?
This pathway caters to university graduates, with program length adjusted based on transferable credits. Complete your after degree at the University of Alberta or through our Collaborative Off-Campus Program with partner institutions.

Why learn at the University of Alberta?
Teaching is a vocation, and we're dedicated to shaping educators who profoundly influence young minds. Our Secondary Education program equips you to foster academic enthusiasm in grades 7-12 students. You'll focus on two specialization areas (one major, one minor) to personalize your learning journey. The curriculum features hands-on experience through a 5-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and 9-week Advanced Professional Term (APT), typically teaching your major subject in both placements.

While normally a four-year program, it's also available as an after degree. Graduates receive certification recommendation upon completion.
