Criminology examines the roots of criminal behavior, how certain actions are classified as crimes, evolving perceptions of deviance and criminality, methods for tracking and quantifying crime, and societal reactions through criminal justice institutions. The program includes two supervised field placements in criminal justice environments, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings while enhancing their academic studies. These experiences introduce students to diverse perspectives and provide hands-on exposure to the criminal justice system.

At the University of Alberta, the Bachelor of Arts in Criminology explores crime and society's responses to it. Students learn from distinguished faculty and researchers through interactive classes, small-group discussions, and personalized guidance. The curriculum builds expertise in criminal behaviors, systemic processes, and institutional frameworks while honing research techniques and theoretical analysis. Opportunities for real-world application include field placements, faculty-led research collaborations, and other hands-on learning experiences.
