The Bachelor of Applied Arts in Gerontology for Practical Nurses is a joint initiative with New Brunswick Community College, blending practical nursing instruction with liberal arts studies focused on aging populations. As the region's demographic shifts toward older adults, there's growing need for trained practical nurses with both hands-on skills and academic knowledge in gerontology. Graduates can pursue careers in diverse environments such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehab clinics, community organizations, home healthcare services, and innovative care models.
Students begin with two years at NBCC to obtain their Practical Nursing diploma, followed by two years at St. Thomas University studying specialized topics including wellness strategies for seniors, psychological aspects of aging, dementia studies, critical perspectives on extended care, and end-of-life considerations. Successful candidates receive their Bachelor of Applied Arts in Gerontology for Practical Nurses upon finishing the four-year curriculum.Interactive small-group learning that prioritizes dialogue, critical thinking, and student engagement.
The program offers multiple pathways: a BA with Gerontology major/minor, the collaborative BAA with NBCC, or a standalone Gerontology certificate.

All instruction comes directly from faculty members—never graduate assistants—ensuring students learn from seasoned professionals.

STU hosts the Third Age Centre, an independent nonprofit dedicated to promoting senior independence and wellbeing, where Gerontology students can contribute to real-world initiatives.

Dr. Albert Banerjee, the university's Chair in Community Health and Aging, leads courses within the Gerontology program.
