StFX's Development Studies program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to explore development theories and practices, focusing on community-level initiatives in the Global South, Canada, and Atlantic Canada.
This interdisciplinary program draws inspiration from the Antigonish Movement, which emphasized community-driven development and aligns with the Coady International Institute's global mission. Rooted in this legacy, Development Studies cultivates analytical thinking while enabling students to apply principles of social and climate justice. Earning a Development Studies degree equips you with the expertise and leadership capabilities to drive positive global change.
The program provides practical engagement in community development initiatives. Following foundational coursework on community development theory, students may pursue internships to work on development projects either locally or internationally. Many students leverage this fieldwork experience as the foundation for their honors thesis research.
