As an Applied Forensic Psychology student, you'll explore how psychological research and practice intersect with criminal justice systems. This program blends clinical psychology's professional applications (including mental health evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation) with forensic psychology's experimental approaches.
You'll develop practical skills through classroom training (covering counseling techniques, interviewing methods, and ethical considerations), visits to legal environments (such as courts and prisons), and hands-on community placements.
The curriculum investigates psychological aspects of legal systems, addressing areas like: witness reliability, juror selection, lie detection, criminal justice processes, law enforcement stress, risk evaluation, criminal patterns, and offender classifications (including sex offenders, psychopaths, and killers).
StFX offers Canada's sole undergraduate program in Applied Forensic Psychology, ideal for those pursuing careers in legal, correctional, or social services - such as psychology practitioners, social workers, law enforcement personnel, legal professionals, criminal analysts, victim support specialists, or reporters. Since most careers in this field require advanced education, the AFP program prepares students for successful admission into graduate programs aligned with their professional aspirations.
