The Department of Geography and Planning at Queen's University delivers an extensive graduate program covering Human Geography, Planning, Earth System Science, and Geographic Information Science, built upon cutting-edge research, outstanding teaching, and close faculty-student partnerships. Our advanced Earth System Science labs feature state-of-the-art GIS and remote-sensing technology, along with modern field equipment and software/hardware for investigating biogeography, climatology, sedimentology, and environmental change biogeochemistry. For human geography and planning studies, we facilitate robust fieldwork addressing pressing public issues across local, national, and global contexts. Students frequently tackle internationally relevant research, such as development initiatives in Latin America or Africa, Arctic ecosystem transformations, or the intersection of global migration and human rights. Recent student research has spanned Nunavut, Japan, the UK, Ghana, China, Bolivia, Guatemala, the Caribbean, and beyond.
Geography and Planning graduates pursue diverse career paths in education (ranging from elementary schools to universities, encompassing both practical training and theoretical instruction), research (spanning fundamental and applied studies across scientific, social science, and humanities disciplines), business sectors (including real estate, GIS applications, and international finance), and government roles (from local planning offices to provincial/federal policy development and international governance organizations). Professionals in these fields are valued for their comprehensive knowledge, analytical abilities, and keen observational talents, working across numerous industries and sectors.
