The Department of History provides rigorous M.A. and Ph.D. programs in both traditional and emerging areas of historical study. Graduate students learn primarily through intimate seminar-style classes, where they critically analyze historical scholarship and conduct original research using primary materials. The department hosts regular seminar series and organizes the biennial McGill-Queen's Graduate History conference, attracting participants from throughout North America. Those who enroll join a vibrant, collaborative academic environment. The Graduate History Students' Association represents student interests and organizes year-round social activities. We actively support international study options, with M.A. candidates able to spend a semester at Shanghai's Fudan University, while Ph.D. students can participate in global programs at institutions like the University of London. Our alumni pursue diverse careers in academia, government, media, cultural institutions, and private sector roles, with current graduates holding positions as professors, researchers, policy experts, archivists, and museum professionals including roles at Ottawa's National Gallery.
