The combined MD/PhD and MD Master's Programs offer advantages for academic pursuits and the growth of physician-scientists by enabling smoother integration between clinical and research training. These programs also create enhanced opportunities to advance translational research.
Our initiatives align with the strategic goals outlined in both the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Strategic Plan and the Government of Canada's Science and Technology Strategy. These frameworks highlight the importance of expanded cross-sector and interdisciplinary training, cultivating research excellence, turning knowledge into real-world solutions, and expanding the talent pool of highly trained professionals. Participants in combined MD/graduate programs introduce a unique clinical-translational viewpoint to their research labs, while simultaneously sharing fundamental scientific perspectives with their medical school peers. This dynamic exchange proves particularly valuable given the growing focus on collaborative learning methods as a key element of Queen's medical education framework.
Students applying to the combined programs must meet the admissions requirements and be accepted into both the MD program and the chosen graduate program. The minimum requirement for the MD/PhD or MD/Master’s Programs at Queens’s University is an Honours baccalaureate degree. Students with a Master’s degree or graduate students in the second year of a Master’s program, are also eligible to apply.
Students registered in a Master’s program at the time of application must complete the requirements for the Master’s degree prior to entry into the combined MD/PhD program, unless promoted to the PhD program through the Mini-Master’s route (Queen’s students only). Applicants must have an obvious and demonstrated research potential.
