Art History programs provide students with a distinctive chance to cultivate visual literacy—the ability to examine images and artifacts thoughtfully while applying analytical thinking. Covering artistic traditions worldwide from ancient times to today, these courses expose learners to diverse interdisciplinary approaches, subjects, and artistic mediums. We investigate how visual and material culture influences societies throughout history and across continents. Queen's Art History students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities, including specialized seminars in Venice, Italy, architectural studies at our historic English castle, and museum training at the on-campus Agnes Etherington Art Centre, which houses The Bader Collection alongside modern, Indigenous, African, and Canadian artworks. Through excursions, internships, and various classroom and off-site activities, students develop practical expertise in evaluating and understanding artistic and architectural creations. These communication and research abilities pave the way for professions in museum curation, cultural heritage, art commerce, and arts-related legal fields.
