The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is an interdisciplinary academic unit where students can acquire language skills, explore diverse literary and cultural traditions, and engage in Linguistics studies. The Department provides language instruction in Anishinaabemowin, Arabic, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Inuktitut, Italian, Japanese, Mohawk, Portuguese, and Spanish, along with degree programs in German Studies; Indigenous Studies; Italian; Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Linguistics; Hispanic Studies; Spanish and Latin American Studies; and World Language Studies. Following its reorganization in 2011, the Department introduced LLCU courses to address evolving student needs and expand elective options. These courses foster analytical thinking and cultural discussions from global viewpoints, frequently incorporating language learning components. From their inception, these courses have attracted significant student interest at Queen's University. While some courses are annual offerings, others rotate every two years. Language study equips students for international travel, work, or residence while enhancing their communication abilities in Canada's diverse society. Degrees centered on languages, literatures, cultures, or Linguistics develop essential skills highly valued in today's interconnected world. The Department actively promotes international study programs available through Queen's for all enrolled students.
