Many of today's heated debates—whether arising from political tensions, technological advancements, economic disparities, or societal shifts—find their expression and resolution through legal frameworks. The Legal Studies curriculum provides a platform to rigorously examine law's societal functions and its intersections with community, governance, and culture through multiple theoretical lenses. This program fosters justice by developing civic engagement capabilities, analytical thinking, and appreciation for diversity, inclusion, and fairness.Students will examine law in its various manifestations—both institutional and customary—and assess it through multiple viewpoints. The curriculum encourages critical examination of whether legal systems adequately address the concerns of all societal segments, including Indigenous communities, ethnic minorities, migrant populations, economically disadvantaged groups, women, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities. Coursework investigates law's relationship with pressing contemporary issues like domestic security, international integration, digital innovation, and ecological concerns. Learners will investigate different approaches to social conflict resolution—ranging from conventional judicial procedures to alternative methods like mediation.Graduates of the Legal Studies program develop competencies valuable for professions involving legal investigation, policy evaluation, rights protection, conflict resolution, and data privacy matters. The curriculum also provides foundational preparation for advanced studies in legal scholarship, juris doctor programs, or certification courses for paralegal and mediation careers.Students may pursue a combined major in Legal Studies and Political Science. This dual degree option allows completion of both programs within a standard four-year timeframe. These disciplines naturally complement each other, as legal systems and political processes are fundamentally interconnected. Participants gain insights into how legal frameworks shape governance structures and how political dynamics influence legislation and judicial outcomes. This combined program particularly prepares students for legal careers, including pathways to law school.
