The publishing sector has undergone a remarkable revolution with an extraordinary increase in content creation, as people and institutions exchange written works and distribute visuals at unprecedented levels. Students completing this two-year diploma will gain essential technical abilities and diverse practical knowledge needed to succeed in this evolving field. Our hands-on and theoretical curriculum guides learners from initial writing phases through final production steps across various publishing mediums. We aim to cultivate students' authorial identities, sharpen their analytical perspectives, and train them in professional writing techniques for diverse readerships. Through creative writing seminars, digital publishing sessions, book design studios, and editorial training, our program equips students with competencies to make their work impactful in both print and digital formats.
Instruction incorporates professional-grade software starting from day one and continuing throughout the program. Learners also benefit from exceptional practical experiences to apply their knowledge. Okanagan College boasts an operational letterpress facility, along with campus resources including Kalamalka Press and Ryga: A Journal of Provocations. These represent just a few avenues for students to develop portfolios that showcase to potential employers how academic training translates into comprehensive professional capabilities. Program alumni enjoy multiple career pathways. Some enter various media environments, from boutique publishers to large-scale publishing firms. Others may opt for advanced education in disciplines like creative writing, journalism, advertising, or communication studies.
A regular applicant will be a secondary graduate or a secondary school student, or its equivalent, who has or who will complete the requirements for senior secondary graduation, or its equivalent, not less than one month prior to commencement of classes for the semester to which admission is sought - either fall or winter.
