The Literature and Critical Theory program appeals to students passionate about examining connections between literature and historical, cultural, political, social, and psychological influences. This program teaches students to analyze how contemporary issues relate to historical contexts and to critically assess representations of the past and visions of the future. Through detailed, contextual examination of literary works and other cultural expressions - including artifacts, institutions, and social customs from various languages, regions, and time periods - students develop critical perspectives. Like all cultural production, literature transcends national borders, especially in our globalized era. The fluid boundaries between cultural mediums and the evolving standards we use to evaluate artistic works reflect historical influences. Therefore, the program encourages multilingual study and engagement with diverse media forms. Our curriculum investigates literary and cultural developments across languages, regions, historical periods, artistic mediums, and academic disciplines.
