A Power Engineer specializes in managing all aspects of power (steam) plant operations. Their expertise covers high and low pressure boilers along with associated systems like water treatment, pump functionality, instrumentation, electrical systems, fuel and combustion processes, air compressors, equipment maintenance, facility upkeep, and refrigeration. Certification is mandated by provincial law for personnel working in heating and power facilities.
Starting with the 2019-20 Academic year, the Power Lab's introduction makes this program non-transferable. Enrollees must complete all required components to qualify for ABSA's reduced steam time credit.
Prospective students must possess a valid ABSA Fourth Class Certificate before entering the Third Class program. The curriculum provides 224 laboratory hours to meet SOPEEC's Third Class certification standards set by ABSA.
Candidates should demonstrate strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating controls while observing instrumentation. Note that some employers may require or assess color vision, physical capabilities, and communication proficiency.
