As a certified medical laboratory technologist, your role involves supporting disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. This program emphasizes examining human blood and bodily fluids for microorganisms, cellular structures, and chemical composition. You'll perform blood compatibility assessments, prepare tissue specimens for microscopic analysis, and while primarily analyzing samples and interpreting findings, patient blood collection remains a fundamental aspect of the role.
The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program concentrates on studying human blood, bodily fluids, and tissues, equipping students with diverse skills for entry-level practice. The curriculum begins with general laboratory coursework before advancing to specialized subjects including Microbiology, Transfusion Science, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, and Histotechnology at NAIT.
After completing NAIT coursework, students advance to partnered clinical facilities where they'll work alongside licensed medical laboratory technologists (MLTs), applying their NAIT-acquired knowledge. They'll further enhance organizational abilities, analytical reasoning, communication techniques, and professional conduct. Clinical placements (Work Integrated Learning - WIL) occur at various locations, requiring students to be prepared for travel within approximately one hour of their assigned site. Clinical rotations may involve day, evening, and weekend shifts.
