Northern's Medical Laboratory Technician diploma equips you with essential knowledge and skills to collaborate with fellow lab professionals. The curriculum covers applied anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry fundamentals, along with hands-on training in specimen collection and processing. You'll become proficient in conducting diagnostic tests and operating specialized equipment while cultivating the professional patient interaction skills vital for this field.
Our program combines simulated practice in our medical lab with real-world experience through placements at local laboratories. This comprehensive approach ensures seamless workplace integration, preparing you for fulfilling careers in hospitals, research facilities, clinics, and other healthcare settings.
This program trains students in essential medical laboratory competencies, including specimen handling, ECG administration, Holter monitor setup, and laboratory instrumentation operation - all while fostering the professional conduct required for patient care scenarios.
Prospective students should note that medical laboratory work involves exposure to demanding situations, including patient trauma, mental health challenges, and high-pressure emergency environments. Graduates must demonstrate resilience in managing these occupational stressors.
The program offers extensive practical experience through both on-campus lab simulations and clinical rotations in hospital and community laboratory settings.
After completing all required coursework, graduates qualify to take the MLPAO's Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician certification examination.
To be eligible you must possess the equivalent of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Proof of Senior High School Diploma/Certificate with 50% in each equivalents for Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.
English Proficiency (we will require one of the following): IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System – minimum overall score of 6.5 must be achieved, with no individual band score under 6.0; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Computer based overall minimum score of 88+; PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic 60+.
