The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology – Applied Social Research program emphasizes practical approaches to social theories and research methods for analyzing and tackling issues faced by northern, rural, and Indigenous communities globally. This interdisciplinary program draws on faculty strengths in Sociology, Health and Population Studies, Gerontology, Anthropology, Environmental Science, and Criminology. Through community engagement, government collaborations, research-focused coursework, and hands-on practicums, students gain theoretical knowledge and methodological skills in both quantitative and qualitative research for applied studies, policy analysis, and program evaluation across public, nonprofit, and private sectors. Core requirements consist of three foundational courses: SOCI 5106 Advanced Sociological Theory; SOCI 5216 Research Design; and either SOCI 5217 Quantitative Analysis or SOCI 5417 Qualitative Analysis. Graduates will be equipped for doctoral studies in Sociology, Anthropology, or Criminology.
Students can complete their degree through either a one-year Major Research Paper (MRP) or a two-year Thesis Research Project (TRP).
