As a unique offering among Canadian institutions, the GESJ program fosters critical examination of power dynamics - exploring who holds influence globally, the reasons behind it, and strategies for challenging and transforming power structures to advance social equity. The curriculum spans multiple disciplines, maintaining strong connections to Social Welfare and Social Development, Religious and Cultural Studies, Political Science, and Philosophy. It caters to students passionate about examining mainstream culture through a critical lens; legal approaches to combating inequality; worldwide human rights issues; international conflict resolution; global activism for fairness; colonial histories; feminist thought; postmodern theories; justice frameworks; and the interplay of race, socioeconomic status, ability, and gender identity. The Power and Inequality concentration addresses diverse interconnected systems of dominance, including colonial legacies, gender norms, racial hierarchies, economic globalization, religious institutions, and human-environment relations.
