The Michener Institute of Education at UHN has received ministerial approval from the Minister of Colleges and Universities to deliver this applied degree program for a five-year period commencing July 2021. Michener guarantees that students admitted to the Cardiovascular Perfusion program during this approval window will be able to finish their studies within an appropriate timeframe.
Canada's sole Master's-level Cardiovascular Perfusion program holds accreditation from Accreditation Canada. This rigorous evaluation process verifies that educational programs adhere to national benchmarks, equipping students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and capabilities to deliver safe, high-quality patient care upon entering the profession. Program graduates qualify to take certification exams in both Canada (through the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion) and the United States (via the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion).
Perfusionists collaborate closely with cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists as vital members of surgical teams. Their principal responsibility involves managing patients' respiratory, circulatory, and physiological functions during procedures, utilizing advanced medical technology such as heart-lung machines. Their professional duties also include the safe administration of blood products and medications. Cardiac operating room work requires significant physical stamina, with typical shifts lasting 10-12 hours due to the intricate and prolonged nature of surgical procedures.
