Memorial University has been at the forefront of advancing aquaculture in Newfoundland and Labrador. The province's aquaculture sector traces its roots to Memorial's Marine Sciences Research Laboratory, which later evolved into the Department of Ocean Sciences. This innovative work persists through ongoing aquaculture studies conducted by both the Department of Ocean Sciences and the Marine Institute, recognized as Canada's premier hub for ocean industry education, training, applied research, and commercial support.
Research initiatives focus on cultivating new species suitable for provincial aquaculture. Faculty members possess specialized knowledge across diverse scientific and practical domains, encompassing feed formulation and evaluation, marine larval rearing, fish breeding practices, large-scale feeding experiments, aquaculture system design for finfish and shellfish, enhancing shellfish farm yields, global partnerships and advisory services, as well as mollusk larvae and juvenile monitoring.
