The Department of Political Science at Memorial University provides graduate-level education, including specialized courses, a diploma program, and MA supervision across key political science areas: Global Politics, Comparative Politics, Canadian Politics, Public Policy, and Political Theory.
Faculty research spans diverse topics: electoral processes and voter behavior; environmental policy and climate governance; migration and ethnic tensions; Indigenous governance systems; democratic participation models; global institutions; rights advocacy; diplomatic relations; gender in politics; policy implementation; financial regulation; local and regional governance; activism and collective action; historical international philosophy; theories of democracy; and concepts of identity, law, and justice. Special regional knowledge includes Western/Southern Europe (focusing on Italy, Spain, and the Balkans), the United States, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Our MA curriculum includes rigorous methodological training in political research.
The Master of Arts program equips students with sophisticated research methodologies, preparing them for professional advancement. Students may choose between a two-year thesis track, a one-year course-intensive path, or a one-year internship-focused alternative.
Master of Arts – The MA program features three pathways: internship, coursework, or thesis. The internship track (one year full-time) combines coursework with a semester-long placement in political organizations, government bodies, or NGOs. The coursework option (one year full-time) involves intensive classroom study. The thesis route (two years full-time) blends coursework with independent research. Students may transition between options with approval from the Graduate Director.
