Memorial University provides distinctive opportunities for historical studies. Housing the Maritime History Archive, Folklore and Language Archive, Centre of Newfoundland Studies, and various other research collections, the St. John's campus fosters cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Our faculty pursue diverse research topics spanning environmental, social, cultural, military history, and more, while guiding graduate studies across eras from antiquity to modern times and regions worldwide.
MA – The Master's program typically takes 12 months to complete, offering two pathways: either four semester courses plus a major research paper, or three semester courses with a research thesis. MA candidates collaborate with faculty on subjects aligned with departmental strengths, including regional histories of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador, the United States, Britain, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. Faculty specialties also encompass thematic fields like medieval studies, maritime history, environmental studies, medical history, labor movements, military affairs, media studies, and gender history.
