Founded in 1785, UNB boasts a rich tradition of guiding students in understanding history. Our history department's graduate programs investigate varied accounts of societies, institutions, and cultures to better comprehend our modern world. Learners cultivate essential skills in critical analysis, professional communication, and advanced reasoning while delving into this perpetually captivating field.
About 50% of our graduate students opt to specialize in Canadian History, with numerous focusing on Atlantic Canadian regional studies. These areas benefit from our affiliated research centers: The Atlantic Canada Studies Centre and the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society. Alumni from UNB's history program pursue fulfilling careers in museums, archives, cultural organizations, government roles, corporate sectors, and academic positions. Presently, the Department of Historical Studies supports around 50 MA and PhD students.
