The Ethnomusicology MA and PhD programs at Memorial University present distinctive pathways for those passionate about exploring music as a cultural phenomenon. These programs deliver comprehensive training in modern ethnomusicological theories and methodologies, alongside immersive studies in musical ethnography and cultural history. Memorial's Ethnomusicology graduate studies blend interdisciplinary learning, with courses available through both the School of Music and Folklore Department. Students can access specialized media production classes in radio and video. Based at the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place (MMaP) - home to a Sundanese gamelan degung - the programs attract top scholars through lecture series, residencies, and global conferences. MA – This program focuses on core research methodologies, particularly ethnographic fieldwork techniques. Alongside foundational coursework, students conduct original, appropriately scoped independent research projects.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelors degree minimum B plus standing in Music or an appropriate area of study in Humanities or Social Science
Applicants from a discipline other than Music will be expected to demonstrate the following skills 1 competent performance in any musical tradition as judged by a musician knowledgeable about the tradition 2 knowledge of culturally appropriate language for discussion of performance techniques in that tradition and 3 ability to discuss musical details on the basis of aural andor written sources as appropriate to that tradition
