The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University provides thesis-focused graduate studies for both Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in process engineering. These programs concentrate on researching methods to process and utilize natural resources for creating high-value products in an environmentally safe and sustainable manner.
Research within Memorial's Process Engineering Department specifically addresses: transforming natural resources from industries like forestry, food processing, oil and gas, and mining into industrial chemicals and final products; environmentally friendly extraction of precious metals from low-grade ores; purification processes for solid fuels, crude oil, and natural gas (including desulfurization and deoxygenation); as well as modeling, designing, simulating, and optimizing control systems for complex reactions and integrated separation processes.
Typically requiring three to four years, the PhD program involves two advanced courses beyond the master's level, passing comprehensive exams, and producing a substantial research thesis.
