The Mechanical Engineering PhD program prepares students to become autonomous researchers. Candidates undertake specialized, innovative studies that advance knowledge in key disciplines such as mechatronics, vibration control, diagnostics, prognostics, renewable energy, energy harvesting, engine technology, dynamics, and design/manufacturing processes.
This doctoral program addresses the growing need for expert professionals in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering across academic and industrial sectors. It welcomes exceptional graduates from Lakehead University's Master's in Engineering programs and equivalent postgraduate programs worldwide. The curriculum enhances students' academic capabilities and research independence by integrating coursework with dissertation development, covering specialized domains within Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.
Working closely with faculty advisors, PhD students develop expertise in analyzing current engineering research, identifying research gaps, and formulating original contributions. They conduct rigorous investigations and are encouraged to disseminate findings through publications in respected international journals and conference proceedings.
Applicants for admission must be graduates of a recognized university and show evidence of scholarly achievement. Except where otherwise stated in the Admission Requirements of a particular program, students must have a Masters degree or its equivalent with an academic average as specified by the academic unit. An applicant holding a degree other than one in the discipline area to which admission is sought will be considered on the basis of Master's courses taken and academic standing.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Minimum Score: 58 (no component score less than 50)
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Minimum Score for Internet Based Test (iBT): 80 (no component score less than 19), Minimum Score for Computer Based Test (cBT): 213 (no component score less than 17), Minimum Score for Paper Based Test (pBT) when Speaking is present: 550 (no component score less than 50).
