Memorial University provides distinctive avenues for exploring historical studies. Housing the Maritime History Archive, Folklore and Language Archive, Centre of Newfoundland Studies, and various other specialized collections, the St. John's campus fosters cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Our faculty members pursue investigations across diverse domains including environmental, social, cultural, and military history, while guiding graduate research spanning ancient civilizations to modern times and encompassing global regions.
PhD Program – Doctoral candidates may pursue any historical discipline, contingent upon forming an appropriate Supervisory Committee (typically 3 members) and examination panel (2 internal and 1 external examiner). The program requires completion of two courses, a French proficiency test, and three reading fields prior to comprehensive exams. Following approval of a thesis proposal, students undertake original dissertation research.
